Overlook Hus is a privately owned vacation home in Tofte, Minnesota, tucked on two peaceful acres between Carlton Peak and Oberg and LeVeaux Mountain on the North Shore of Lake Superior.
But more than anything, this home is a family story. Luke and Laura met in 1997 while in college in Duluth and got married in 2000. They not only fell in love with each other during those early years, they also came to love all of beautiful Duluth and the entire North Shore of Lake Superior. While raising four active kids and living in various places throughout the state, they were always drawn back to the peaceful and beckoning beauty of the Great Lake. Over the years the family had the opportunity to spend countless hours making many treasured memories exploring the North Shore together. Over time, as the family began to settle back into the Duluth area, their dreams of someday opening their own vacation rental up north and building a family legacy home and business became a reality when they purchased a home in the woods on LeVeaux Mountain in the spring of 2025.
Over the course of eight months, our family poured our hands, hearts, and creativity into transforming this property into a place of rest, beauty, and connection. Every part of the home was shaped with intention — not just to look beautiful, but to feel calm, grounded, and welcoming.
Laura led the redesign from start to finish. She reimagined the layout, framed a new bathroom, designed and installed a new kitchen and a new kitchenette, built shelves by hand, tiled every backsplash, and together we thoughtfully selected the furnishings, linens, and amenities throughout. Her eye for warmth, simplicity, and function is woven into every room.
Our sons, Ethan and Caleb, brought their own craftsmanship and energy to the renovation. Together, they installed the hardwood floors, built the outdoor sauna, completed much of the tile work throughout the home, and helped clear the woods of non-native trees to open up the natural beauty of the property. They spent countless hours working on anything and everything that needed to be done. We have mused that this project turned them from young men finding their way in life to mature men who have the confidence to do whatever they put their minds to. Ethan also painted the mural inside the home and designed the Lagom Escapes logo, adding a personal and creative touch that has become one of our favorite details.
Our daughters, Elise and Ava, contributed to pulling it all together when they could be there between school and their own busy lives. Our entire family, including our daughter's beloved fiancé James, has had so much fun together brainstorming on design and guest experience ideas, assembling furnishings, and helping with the website. We have also had the privilege of spending a lot of time together exploring the area, playing games at all hours, and making memories in the home, all while mindfully tweaking every detail with the hope of how our guests will best enjoy the place with their loved ones.
Luke painted the walls, assembled furniture, designed the website, and streamlined operations as he worked tirelessly on every project along with Laura and the boys. He also captured the home through photography — images that now hang throughout the house and appear across the website — with the hope of reflecting what we love most about this place: natural light, quiet mornings, Lake Superior views, and the feeling of slowing down. His photography displayed throughout the home is one of the more personal touches guests tend to notice.
The name Lagom comes from the Swedish idea of "just the right amount" — not too much, not too little. That idea guided the entire renovation. Real wood. Real stone. Clean spaces. Warm textures. Thoughtful amenities. Room to gather, and room to rest.
The home was designed for the rhythms of the North Shore: coffee on the covered porch, evenings by the fire pit, quiet time in the sauna, hammocks between the pines, and space to reconnect after a day on the trail, the lake, or the mountain.
What began as a renovation became something much more meaningful to us — a season of family teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and joy. We are grateful to now share the fruits of that work with our guests who come here to rest, explore, celebrate, and make lasting memories of their own.
Welcome to Overlook Hus. We hope you feel the care that went into it.
