Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing on the North Shore

Most people come to the North Shore in winter for Lutsen. The downhill mountain is seven miles from the house and it is the obvious anchor for a winter trip. But the North Shore has some of the best cross-country skiing and snowshoeing terrain in Minnesota, and most visitors never get to it.

Here is what is available within 30 minutes of Overlook Hus.

Norpine Trail System

The Norpine Trail System covers 65 kilometers of groomed cross-country trails between Lutsen and Tofte. The trails run through boreal forest along the Sawtooth Range with Lake Superior visible from the higher sections. Norpine maintains both classic and skate skiing lanes.

The trail system is maintained by the Lutsen-Tofte Tourism Association and the Norpine volunteers — one of the more dedicated trail maintenance operations in the state. Conditions are typically good from December through March. Trail reports and current conditions are at lutsen.com/norpine.

The Caribou Highlands Lodge trailhead at Lutsen, 7 miles from the house, is the main starting point. Day passes are available. Ski rentals are available through Lutsen Mountains.

The Norpine trails are also the course for the Norpine Fat Bike Classic in January, which gives some sense of the terrain. Rolling, forested, and genuinely scenic.

Pincushion Mountain — Grand Marais

Pincushion Mountain sits above Grand Marais at the end of County Road 53 off the Gunflint Trail. The trail system offers about 25 kilometers of groomed nordic skiing with views looking down over the Grand Marais harbor and Lake Superior.

The combination of Pincushion skiing in the morning and an afternoon in Grand Marais is one of the better ways to spend a winter day on the North Shore. Crosby's Bakery, Voyageur Brewing, and a short walk to Artist Point make a natural second half of the day.

Pincushion is 25 minutes northeast of Overlook Hus. Trail conditions are posted at visitcookcounty.com.

Cascade River State Park — Snowshoeing

Cascade River State Park is 16 miles northeast. In winter, the waterfall trails become snowshoe routes through a forest that looks entirely different when it is white. The river runs open year-round and the falls don't fully freeze — the combination of moving water and snow-covered forest is the visual reward.

Snowshoes are not required on packed trails, but they make the off-trail sections possible. Sawtooth Outfitters in Tofte is the most convenient rental option — 3.4 miles from the house. Also available at Lutsen Mountains and from several outfitters in Grand Marais.

Superior Hiking Trail in Winter

The Superior Hiking Trail remains accessible in winter. Most sections are not groomed, so snowshoes or microspikes are necessary depending on conditions. The Carlton Peak approach from Britton Peak Trailhead and the LeVeaux and Oberg loops are popular winter routes when snow is packed.

Winter conditions can change quickly. Check recent trail reports before heading out on a longer section. The SHT Association maintains current conditions at shta.org.

Back at the House

The boot and glove dryers in the mudroom matter on a multi-day trip. Cross-country ski boots and snowshoe straps that dry overnight make the second day significantly more comfortable than stuffing wet gear into a corner.

The outdoor sauna is the standard end to a winter activity day on the North Shore. Twenty minutes of heat after a long ski, then inside to the fireplace. It is the sequence that makes a winter trip here feel different from other winter trips.

Planning Notes

Ski rentals: Sawtooth Outfitters in Tofte is the most convenient option — 3.4 miles from the house and stocked for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and more. Also available at Lutsen Mountains and from outfitters in Grand Marais. Book rentals in advance during holiday periods.

Trail passes: Norpine day passes cover the groomed trail system. Pincushion operates on a donation/voluntary pass basis. State parks require a vehicle permit.

Season: Reliable snow typically runs mid-December through mid-March. Lake-effect snow from Superior extends the season and keeps snowfall consistent through most winters.

Conditions: Lutsen.com, visitcookcounty.com, and the Minnesota DNR dnr.state.mn.us all carry current winter trail conditions.

Overlook Hus is your base for all of it. Check availability and book directly.
