Fisherman's Picnic: Grand Marais's Biggest Weekend of the Year

Fisherman's Picnic: Grand Marais's Biggest Weekend of the Year

Grand Marais is a town of about 1,350 people. On Fisherman's Picnic weekend, roughly 10,000 show up. Every lodging property from Tofte to Grand Portage fills. The harbor fills. The streets fill. The Lions Club sells over 1,000 pounds of deep-fried herring sandwiches, and people stand in line for them willingly, happily, and repeatedly.

This is Cook County's annual community reunion. It has been going on since the early 1920s. The Lions Club has organized it since 1951. It was not held during World War II and has not missed a year since. The 97th annual Fisherman's Picnic runs July 30 through August 2, 2026. Overlook Hus is 24 minutes down Highway 61.

The Fishburger

Everything else about this weekend is secondary to the fishburger. Deep-fried Lake Superior herring on a bun, four dollars. The Lions Club hauls the herring up from the harbor dock by wheelbarrow and fries it in front of you. One Lion has run the stand for 44 years. That's the kind of institutional knowledge that produces a consistent product.

It tastes exactly like the North Shore. You should eat at least two.

The Weekend

The event runs Wednesday through Sunday, building toward the weekend. The full days are Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday morning starts with the Fisherman's Picnic 5K Trail Run and Walk at Pincushion Mountain above Grand Marais. The same trail system used for mountain biking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter. The views from up there look down over the harbor and the lake.

Saturday evening ends with fireworks over the harbor. Grand Marais Harbor is one of the better fireworks venues anywhere. The water reflects it and the scale of the lake makes everything feel bigger.

Sunday afternoon is the parade down Broadway Avenue through downtown. It's a small-town parade done right. Local floats, community groups, and enough candy thrown from vehicles to make the walk home significantly heavier than the walk in.

Throughout the weekend: live music at Harbor Park, food trucks, craft vendors and art booths, kiddie rides and inflatables, bingo, a medallion hunt, a pancake breakfast, and the daily contests that give the event its personality.

The Contests

The loon calling contest. The cutest puppy contest. The rock skipping contest. The fish toss. Log rolling. Minnow races. These are not ironic. They are genuine community events that people prepare for and take seriously, and watching them is part of the experience.

A collectible button serves as your event pass for the weekend. The Lions Club also runs a grand raffle with a $10,000 prize.

The Crowds (Plan Accordingly)

Fisherman's Picnic is the single busiest weekend of the year on the North Shore. Grand Marais lodging books out first, sometimes a year in advance. The rest of the county fills behind it.

Overlook Hus is 24 minutes southwest on Highway 61 in Tofte, which puts you close enough to be in Grand Marais for any part of the weekend and back at the house for everything else. Friday evening arrival, Saturday for the full day and fireworks, Sunday morning for the parade, Sunday afternoon back at the fire pit.

Book well in advance. This weekend does not have last-minute availability.

What It Is

Fisherman's Picnic is one of those events that exists because a community decided it should exist and has kept deciding that for a hundred years. It is not a produced festival with a brand and a sponsor grid. It is the Lions Club, the harbor, the herring, the same families coming back every year. Some of those families have been coming since their grandparents did.

Grand Marais is worth the drive on an ordinary Tuesday. On Fisherman's Picnic weekend, it is worth planning a trip around.
