Cook County doesn't do a big-city Fourth. It does something better. The week around Independence Day on the North Shore is a string of community celebrations, each one rooted in the place rather than imported from somewhere else. A muddy trail race that's been going for decades. Fireworks over Lake Superior. Live music in a field at Lutsen. An art festival in a town of about 50 people.
If you're staying at Overlook Hus in the first two weeks of July, here's what you're driving distance from.
July 4th in Tofte: The Tofte Trek
The centerpiece of the local Fourth is the Tofte Trek, a 10K wilderness race that starts at the Birch Grove Community Center about three miles from the house. The course climbs toward the Superior Hiking Trail, then drops back down through snowmobile trails that are, by July, reliably muddy. It's been a community tradition for over 40 years.
The full schedule on race day:
- 7:30 AM: Packet pickup opens
- 9:00 AM: 10K Wilderness Walk
- 9:05 AM: Kids sprint (ages 4-12, free to enter)
- 9:20 AM: One-mile race (free)
- 9:30 AM: 10K Wilderness Run
Registration is $40 in advance or $45 on the day. The first 200 finishers in the 10K get a shirt. Even if you're not racing, the energy at the Birch Grove Community Center that morning is worth seeing. It's a small-town Fourth in the best sense.
The Tofte festivities continue from 11 AM to 5 PM with bouncy houses, minnow races, craft vendors, and live music. The parade steps off at 3 PM. Fireworks light up Tofte Town Park after dark.

July 4th in Grand Marais: Fireworks Over the Harbor

Grand Marais does the Fourth the way it does most things. Low-key, genuinely fun, with a view that makes everything better. The harbor fills with people. There's a parade through town, live music, and fireworks after dark that reflect off the lake in a way you won't see in a parking lot or a suburban park. When the fireworks go up over that harbor, it's one of the better Fourth of July moments in the state.
Grand Marais is 24 minutes northeast on Highway 61. On the Fourth, that's worth every minute.
July 4-5 in Grand Portage: Rock the Lake
Grand Portage Lodge and Casino hosts Rock the Lake on the Fourth and the day after, about 45 minutes northeast of the house. It's a free outdoor music festival by the lake featuring tribute bands for classic rock headliners. Past lineups have included tribute acts for Lynyrd Skynyrd, Journey, Tom Petty, and Kiss. Fireworks follow at 10:15 PM on the Fourth.
Bring your own chair. Free to attend. Check grandportage.com for the current year's lineup and times.
July 5-6 in Hovland: Hovland Arts Festival
Hovland is a small community about 14 miles northeast of Grand Marais on Highway 61. The Hovland Arts Festival happens at the historic Hovland Town Hall the weekend after the Fourth, from 10 AM to 4 PM both days.
It's a genuine community arts show with handcrafted jewelry, pottery, woodwork, fine art, and Native American crafts. Local musicians play. Trinity Lutheran Church runs the food. The setting, a century-old town hall next to a historic church on the shore of Lake Superior, is hard to beat.

July 10-13 at Lutsen: Lutsong Music Festival

The Lutsong Music Festival at Caribou Highlands Lodge in Lutsen is seven miles northeast of the house and one of the best music events on the North Shore all year. Four days, two stages, a vendor village, food, and drinks on the great lawn of the lodge.
Past years have featured the Honeydogs, Rogue Valley, Jeremy Messersmith, Wild Horses, and Jack Klatt. Full weekend passes run around $115. Single-day tickets start at $60. Kids under 12 get in free, and it's dog friendly.
Lutsong is a genuine music festival in a setting that most festivals can't come close to. The Sawtooth Range behind you, Lake Superior in front, good music from mid-afternoon through evening.

July 12-13 in Grand Marais: Grand Marais Arts Festival
The following weekend, downtown Grand Marais hosts the Grand Marais Arts Festival, presented by the Grand Marais Art Colony. It's one of the most established arts festivals in the region, drawing artists from across the country alongside local makers.
Hours are Saturday 9 AM to 5 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 4 PM. Free to attend. The combination of the festival, the harbor, and a meal at Voyageur Brewing or the Angry Trout makes for a full day with no effort at all.

Planning Your Week
The first two weeks of July are among the most active on the North Shore, but they don't feel crowded the way a city festival does. Everything is spread across 60 miles of shoreline. You can hit the Tofte Trek on the Fourth, catch fireworks in Grand Marais that evening, stop in Hovland on the fifth, and spend the second week between Lutsong and the Arts Festival without ever feeling like you're fighting for space.
Overlook Hus is ideally positioned for all of it. Tofte Trek is three miles down the road. Grand Marais is 24 minutes. Lutsen is seven. Check event websites for current year dates and times, as schedules can shift slightly year to year. The traditions, though, have been running for decades and aren't going anywhere.
