The North Shore has always attracted people who want to test themselves against the landscape. The Sawtooth Range, the Superior Hiking Trail, the boreal forest, the unpaved roads dropping in and out of river gorges. It was only a matter of time before that terrain became a race course.
Between Tofte and Grand Marais, there are now six major endurance events spread across the calendar year. Fat biking in January snow. Trail running on technical single-track in May. The biggest mountain bike weekend of the year in late June. A multi-day stage race in August. A 100-mile trail run in September. Something for every discipline, every distance, and every level of suffering you're willing to sign up for.
Overlook Hus is positioned at the center of all of it. Seven miles southwest of Lutsen Mountain. Twenty-four minutes from Grand Marais. The home has vertical wall-mounted bike hanging spots for storing and organizing mountain bikes. The sauna is available year-round. After a long race day, that matters.
January: Norpine Fat Bike Classic

January 9-11, 2026 · Cascade Lodge, Lutsen
The Norpine Fat Bike Classic starts and finishes at Cascade Lodge, right on the Lake Superior shore. The course heads north along the Cascade River through thick spruce forest on Piston Bully-groomed Norpine trails. Two distances: 14 miles (Short Pine) and 25 miles (Long Pine, with 2,700 feet of climbing).
The weekend is as much event as race. Friday arrivals get mulled wine and a Dark Sky Tour. Saturday is race day followed by a BBQ lunch at Cascade Restaurant and local beer from Voyageur Brewing. Awards are made by Crosby's Bakery in Grand Marais.

May: Superior Spring Trail Race

May 16, 2026 · Caribou Highlands Lodge, Lutsen
The Superior Spring Trail Race covers the same trail network as its fall counterpart, on 99% single-track through the Sawtooth Range via the Superior Hiking Trail. Three distances all start and finish at Caribou Highlands Lodge: the 50K (4,200 feet of gain, 9-hour cutoff), the 25K (2,300 feet, 8-hour cutoff), and the 12.5K (600 feet, point-to-point). The 7:00 AM gun goes off on Ski Hill Road.
In May, the snowmelt is still feeding the rivers and the trails are technical. The birch trees are just coming into leaf. It's one of the better race-day settings in the state.

May: Le Grand du Nord Gravel Classic
May 23, 2026 · Start: Downtown Grand Marais
Le Grand du Nord starts right on the harbor in Grand Marais and climbs immediately into the Sawtooth Range. Three distances: 110 miles (6,000 feet of climbing, remote two-track sections with possible stream crossings), 54 miles (2,600 feet, maintained gravel), and 26 miles (1,700 feet, mix of pavement and gravel).
The 110-mile course is legitimately remote. There are sections of rocky two-track with enough beaver activity that a stream crossing should be assumed. It's not like any other gravel century in the Midwest.

June: Lutsen 99er (The Busiest Weekend of the Year)
June 27, 2026 · Superior National Golf Course, Lutsen
The Lutsen 99er is the biggest event of the year on the North Shore. A Life Time race now, but a community institution long before that. The start and finish are at Superior National Golf Course overlooking Lake Superior. Four distances: 99er, 59er, 45er, and 29er. There's a Little Niners kids race. Friday includes packet pickup, an athlete expo with vendors, local food and drink, and a community atmosphere that fills every lodging property from Tofte to Grand Marais.
The course starts with a Category 3 climb out of the Lutsen valley and then opens into glacially sculpted terrain through the boreal forest. Sections of trail see as much moose traffic as human traffic. That is not a marketing line. It is a real thing that happens out there.
The 99er is also a qualifier for the Life Time Leadville Trail 100 MTB, which draws a serious contingent of competitive riders into the mix alongside the recreational field.
Plan lodging well in advance for this weekend. It books out months ahead.

August: Sawtooth Stage Race
August 21-23, 2026 · Grand Marais and surrounding trail systems
The Sawtooth Stage Race is a new multi-day mountain bike event from Heck of the North Productions, running three trail systems over three days. Day one is at Pincushion Mountain above Grand Marais, an XCO-style lap race on recently updated trails. The full stage race format rewards consistency across multiple disciplines and multiple days.

September: Superior Fall Trail Race
September 11-12, 2026 · Finish: Caribou Highlands Lodge, Lutsen
The Superior Fall Trail Races are the flagship event of the North Shore racing calendar. Three distances, all finishing at Caribou Highlands Lodge in Lutsen.
The 100-mile race starts at Gooseberry Falls State Park on Friday, September 11 at 8:00 AM, with 17,350 feet of total gain and loss, 13 aid stations, and a 38-hour cutoff. The 50-mile starts Saturday at Finland Community Center, with 7,950 feet of climbing and a 16:45 cutoff. The 26.2-mile starts near Schroeder on Saturday with 4,050 feet and a 14-hour cutoff.
The course parallels Lake Superior, climbs to near 2,000-foot peaks in the Sawtooth Range, crosses whitewater rivers, and moves through boreal forest the entire way. The fall color timing in September and early October makes this one of the most visually dramatic trail races anywhere in the country.

Staying at Overlook Hus for Race Weekend

The house was not built as a race house, but it works well as one. Vertical bike hangers on the wall mean bikes come in off the car without taking over the floor. The electric sauna heats in 40 to 50 minutes. The fully equipped kitchen handles pre-race meals and post-race recovery food without anyone needing to go anywhere.
For the Lutsen 99er in June, Overlook Hus is seven miles from the start line. For the Superior Spring and Fall Trail Races, Caribou Highlands Lodge is the finish line, also seven miles away. For Le Grand du Nord and the Sawtooth Stage Race, Grand Marais is 24 minutes.
The North Shore racing calendar runs January through September. The house is available for all of it. Book early for the 99er weekend — it goes first every year.
