The North Shore is 3 hours and 45 minutes from the Twin Cities. That makes it exactly the right distance for a Friday afternoon departure. Leave after work, stop in Duluth or along the shore for dinner, arrive at the house by nine. Three days, two nights, and everything you came for.
Overlook Hus is at Overlook Hus in Tofte, positioned at the center of the North Shore's best terrain. Lutsen is 7 miles northeast. The closest Superior Hiking Trail access is 4.8 miles. Temperance River State Park is 6 miles southwest. Grand Marais is 24 minutes. You can cover the entire North Shore without ever feeling like you're chasing the next thing.
Here's how three days actually work.
Friday: The Drive Up
Leave the Twin Cities by 3 PM if you can. The drive north on 35 to Duluth takes about two and a half hours on a good day. From Duluth, Highway 61 along the lake takes another hour and a half to Tofte.
The drive itself is worth doing right. Stop at the lift bridge in Duluth if it's your first time, or skip it if you've seen it and go straight to food. Duluth Grille is the best breakfast and brunch spot in the city — they run a waitlist you can join before you arrive, so put your name in while you're still on the road. If you're arriving later and want lunch, Corktown Deli is in West Duluth and shares a parking lot with Duluth Grille. Northern Smokehouse has sandwiches worth stopping for and serves beer and wine.
Once you're on Highway 61 heading northeast, the lake is on your right and the Sawtooth Range builds on your left. Stop at Gooseberry Falls if it's still light. The lower falls are a two-minute walk from the parking lot and worth five minutes of your time. Split Rock Lighthouse is visible from the bay pullout without leaving your car — a good stop if you have kids who need to get out.
Palisade Head is just past Silver Bay, about 45 minutes from Overlook Hus. It is technically part of Tettegouche State Park, though not contiguous with the main park — located about two miles east of it. A short drive up the cliff road puts you at the top of a 350-foot volcanic rock face with a panoramic view of the lake that stops most people mid-sentence. Get out of the car or take it in through the windshield — either way it's the best two-minute stop on the North Shore.
By the time you reach Tofte, you're ready to be somewhere. Go straight to the house.
Friday evening at the house:
Start the sauna before you do anything else. It heats in 40 to 50 minutes and the rest of your unpacking fills exactly that time. The outdoor sauna is the best first-night ritual on the North Shore. Twenty minutes of heat after a car drive does what nothing else does.
In summer, the outdoor shower for a cold contrast after the sauna. Any season, come back in, pour something from the kitchen, and make a fire in the fire pit. Eight Adirondack chairs ring it. The six sun loungers face east over the lake. The pines are overhead. If it's clear, the stars are dense enough that it takes a few minutes to find the constellations you know.
Dinner at the house the first night. The kitchen is fully stocked with basics. A simple meal, the fire burning down, and nowhere to be by morning.
Saturday: The Full Day
Saturday is the long one. Two things: a hike in the morning and Grand Marais in the afternoon and evening.
Morning hike:
The Oberg Mountain and LeVeaux trailhead is 4.8 miles northeast on Onion River Road off Highway 61. Both trails share the same parking lot. Oberg is the more popular of the two — a 2.5-mile loop with multiple overlooks of Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Range. During fall color season it draws serious crowds on weekends. If you're going on a Saturday in late September or early October, arrive before 9 AM or go to LeVeaux instead.
LeVeaux is the better hike anyway. A 3.5-mile loop on the same Superior Hiking Trail network, with overlooks that look back toward Carlton Peak and across the forested valley. Almost nobody goes there because everyone follows the signs to Oberg. You will have it mostly to yourself.
Carlton Peak is 5.6 miles from the house and the hike approach from Britton Peak Trailhead is about 4 miles round trip with a steep final push to the summit. The views from the top are among the best on the shore. Better for groups that want a workout.
If you want water rather than elevation, Temperance River State Park is 6 miles southwest. The gorge trail runs along the river through a slot canyon that is dramatic in any season and stunning in spring or after heavy rain.

Afternoon and evening in Grand Marais:
Get back to the house and clean up. Each bedroom has a private en-suite bathroom with a rainfall shower head and a detached sprayer — the right way to end a morning on the trail. Then head northeast on Highway 61. Grand Marais is 24 minutes. The drive is part of it — the road stays close to the lake and the Sawtooth Range drops toward the shore the whole way.
Arrive in the early afternoon. Walk to Artist Point first. It's a five-minute walk from downtown parking along the breakwater to a rocky point that juts into the lake. The view back toward the harbor and the hills above town is the one you've seen in North Shore photos.
Sivertson Gallery on Wisconsin Street is worth an hour if you have any interest in regional art. They represent serious artists and the collection runs deep. North House Folk School is a block away on the harbor — even if you're not taking a course, the indoor shop carries art supplies, regional books, and handmade goods worth browsing. The grounds and the boats on the water are worth seeing.
For dinner, Voyageur Brewing has a rooftop deck with harbor views and food that's better than a brewery usually bothers to be. The staff is genuinely friendly. If it's a summer evening and the deck is open, this is the right call. Angry Trout is the other option — walk-in only, no reservations, call about 15 minutes before you plan to arrive to get your name on the waitlist. Fresh local fish done right, outdoor seating along the water.
Drive home in the dark on Highway 61. The lake is invisible but present. The trees close in on both sides. Arrive at the house and the fire pit is waiting.
Sunday: Earn the Drive Home
Sunday is for one thing done well before you leave.
Option 1: Lutsen Mountains
Seven miles northeast. In winter, it's skiing. The mountain has 95 runs across four peaks and the only mountaintop gondola in the Midwest. In spring, summer, and fall, the gondola runs for non-skiers and puts you on the summit of Moose Mountain above the lake. The views from the top are the broadest single panorama on the North Shore. The mountain bike trail network at Lutsen is one of the best in the Midwest for warmer months — rent gear from Sawtooth Outfitters in Tofte if you need it. Tettegouche State Park is about 20 miles southeast on the drive home and a natural add-on stop before turning toward the Twin Cities.
Option 2: Tettegouche State Park
Twenty-five minutes southeast of Overlook Hus. Two hikes worth doing. Shovel Point is a short trail along the cliff edge above Lake Superior — one of the most dramatic short hikes on the shore. The High Falls of the Baptism River, about 60 feet, is inland from the trailhead and worth the walk. The state parks permit covers both. If you went to Grand Marais on Saturday, adding Tettegouche makes Sunday a natural continuation northeast before turning home.
Option 3: A slow morning
This is also correct. The house has everything for a slow Sunday. The kitchen for a real breakfast. The living room fireplace in the cooler months. The covered porch when the weather is good. The sauna again before you pack. If the timing works, ask about late checkout — it's sometimes available depending on the next booking. Nobody who has ever done this has regretted it.

Seasonal Notes
Fall (mid-September through mid-October): This itinerary is at its best. The Sawtooth Range turns red, orange, and gold. Saturday's hike becomes one of the best color hikes in the Midwest. Grand Marais is vibrant through early October. Book early — the first two weeks of October fill first.
Winter (December through March): Replace Saturday's hike with a ski day at Lutsen. The sauna goes from a pleasant ritual to the centerpiece of the stay. The boot and glove dryers in the mudroom matter. Grand Marais in winter is quieter and genuine. The Hygge Festival runs in early to mid-February.
Spring (April through May): The waterfalls are at peak flow from snowmelt. Temperance River and Cascade River in April and early May are at their most powerful. The trails are empty. Every restaurant has tables. The shoulder season post on this site covers it in more detail.
Summer (June through August): Add kayaking or paddleboarding on the lake. The outdoor shower cold plunge is in season. Gitchi-Gami Trail runs directly across the road for cycling. The evenings are long and the lake is at its most accessible.
Gear rental: Sawtooth Outfitters in Tofte rents bikes, skis, snowboards, snowshoes, paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes. Everything you need for any season is available without hauling it from home.
