North Shore Minnesota with Kids: The Honest Family Guide

The North Shore works for families better than most people expect. The trails are accessible, the state parks have short loops that deliver big payoff, the lake keeps everyone occupied for hours with almost no planning, and the weather on any given day might require pivoting completely to something indoors. The good news is the indoors are covered.

Overlook Hus sleeps 12 across three bedrooms, all with private en-suite bathrooms. That means two or three families sharing a house without sharing a bathroom. The 800 square foot heated game room — ping pong, air hockey, foosball, shuffleboard, darts, an 85-inch TV with Sonos surround sound — exists specifically because the North Shore weather does not cooperate on a schedule. When it rains on Saturday, the game room is the backup plan. It is a good backup plan.

Here is how a family trip actually works up here.

The House for Families

Three bedrooms across two floors means families can spread out and have their own space. Bedroom 1 on the upper floor has a king, a queen, and a queen pull-out sofa. Bedroom 2 is a queen with an en-suite. Bedroom 3 is on the main floor with a queen and its own en-suite. Three families traveling together, or two families with kids spread between rooms, both configurations work cleanly.

The kitchen is fully stocked. Coffee, tea, hot cocoa, sugar, honey, and creamers are all provided. Spices, olive oil, salt and pepper are there. A Vitamix and espresso machine. You can cook real meals for a group without anyone making a grocery run for basics on the first night.

The hammocks between the pines are a reliable kid occupation. So is the fire pit, which comes with firewood provided. The Gitchi-Gami State Trail — a paved walking and biking path along the lake — runs directly across the road. A short walk from the front door gets everyone outside without a car.

Slippers and robes are provided for every guest. The popcorn bar is stocked. The board games and puzzles are there for the evenings.

Easy Trails That Deliver

The best North Shore hikes for kids are the ones where the payoff comes early and the trail is forgiving. These are the ones within 30 minutes of the house.

Gooseberry Falls State Park (20 miles southwest) The lower falls at Gooseberry are a two-minute walk from the parking lot. A five-minute walk gets you to the middle falls. The whole lower loop is under two miles and suitable for most ages. The river tumbles through basalt ledges and the spray reaches the trail in good flow. Requires a Minnesota State Parks permit. This is the right first stop on the drive up, or an easy standalone day trip.

Temperance River State Park (6 miles southwest) The gorge trail at Temperance runs along the river through a narrow slot canyon carved into basalt. Short distances, dramatic scenery, and the river is loud enough that kids who would otherwise have no interest in hiking find themselves absorbed. A few wooden bridges cross the gorge at different points. Easy to turn around whenever needed. State parks permit required.

Shovel Point at Tettegouche State Park (25 minutes northeast) A short trail along the cliff edge above Lake Superior. The views of the basalt headlands and the open water are the best on the shore for the effort required. Suitable for kids who can walk on uneven trail. Keep them back from the edge. The trailhead has a good parking area and restrooms. High Falls of the Baptism River is an additional short trail from the same park if the group has more energy.

Oberg Mountain (4.8 miles northeast) A 2.5-mile loop with overlooks of Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Range. Manageable for most kids aged 6 and up with normal trail fitness. In fall color season the overlooks are exceptional. Can get crowded on peak weekends — go early morning or choose LeVeaux from the same parking lot for a quieter option.

Gooseberry Falls, one of the most accessible state park stops on the North Shore
Gooseberry Falls State Park is 20 miles southwest and right off Highway 61.

When the Weather Doesn't Cooperate

The North Shore weather changes fast. A clear morning can become a cold rain by afternoon without much warning. This is not a problem if you're staying somewhere built for it.

The game room stays heated year-round. Ping pong, air hockey, foosball, shuffleboard, and darts cover most age groups. The 85-inch TV with Sonos surround sound handles movie afternoons. The living room has a gas fireplace. The popcorn bar gets used.

Grand Marais is 24 minutes northeast and has enough covered ground for a rainy day. Sivertson Gallery is worth an hour. The bookshop and small shops along Wisconsin Street. A long lunch at Voyageur Brewing with the kids. It is the kind of town where a bad weather day turns into a leisurely one without much effort.

Skiing with Kids at Lutsen

Lutsen Mountains is 7 miles northeast and has a proper beginner program. The Snow Sports Center at the base of Eagle Mountain has a Magic Carpet lift and green terrain that is genuinely beginner-accessible. Group lessons run on Saturdays and holiday periods. Private lessons are available daily.

Kids learn faster than adults at the mountain, and Lutsen has the patience of a resort that has been running family ski programs since 1948. The gondola ride alone is worth the trip for children who aren't ready to ski — it rises 1,000 feet above Lake Superior to the summit of Moose Mountain and the views are something a kid will talk about for a long time.

Boot and glove dryers in the Overlook Hus mudroom mean everything is dry and warm for day two.

Swimming and Beach Time

Lake Superior is cold. It is cold in July and colder in every other month. Swimming in the lake itself is not the move for most families.

The rivers are a different story. Upstream from the highway, away from the mouths, the North Shore rivers have shallow stretches where the water slows and warms enough for kids to wade and swim. But check conditions before you go. When rivers are running fast from snowmelt or recent rain, the current is strong and the water is high. Those days are not swimming days. On a calm summer afternoon when the water is low and clear, the right upstream spot is as good as any swimming hole.

The lake itself is always worth time at the shoreline even without swimming. Rock hunting along the gravel beaches is a serious North Shore activity. Lake Superior agates, pink rhyolite, and smooth basalt are all findable if you spend time looking. Kids who do this once tend to be absorbed by it.

The Gitchi-Gami Trail

The Gitchi-Gami State Trail is a paved walking and cycling path that runs along the Lake Superior shoreline. It passes directly across the road from Overlook Hus. No car needed. The trail runs in both directions from the property and is suitable for bikes, scooters, walking, and running. For families with younger kids who are not ready for trail hikes, this is the easiest way to get outside with the lake in view.

Practical Notes for Families

Minnesota State Parks permit: Gooseberry Falls, Tettegouche, and Temperance River all require a Minnesota State Parks vehicle permit. Buy an annual permit before you go if you plan to hit more than two parks — it pays for itself immediately and covers every state park in Minnesota. Available at mndnr.gov.

Grocery stop: There is a grocery store in Tofte 3.4 miles down the road. Stock up on arrival or stop on the way through. The house is stocked with staples but not full groceries.

State parks timing: Gooseberry and Temperance get busy on summer weekends. Arrive before 10 AM or go late afternoon for easier parking.

Restaurant tip for families: Bluefin Grille at Bluefin Bay in Tofte is 3.4 miles down the road and has a broad menu that works for kids and adults. Lake views, no long drive, and easy to get in and out without a production.

Lutsen lessons: Book ski school in advance during holiday periods. It fills.

The North Shore rewards families who come with some flexibility and no pressure to see everything. The lake has a way of making a two-hour beach walk feel like the whole point of the trip. The game room handles the rest.
