The fire pit at Overlook Hus faces east toward Lake Superior. On a clear night, the star density over the lake is remarkable — far enough from Duluth that light pollution drops off, and the lake itself acts as a dark horizontal plane that lets the sky read all the way down to the horizon.
On the right night, the northern lights are visible from the property without getting in a car.
This is what you need to know to catch them.
How the Aurora Works
The aurora borealis is caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with Earth's atmosphere. The intensity is measured by the Kp index, which runs from 0 to 9. Higher Kp means a stronger, more widespread display.
From the North Shore of Minnesota:
- Kp 3: Possible with a very dark sky and clear conditions. Faint green on the horizon, most visible in photos
- Kp 4-5: Clearly visible to the naked eye. Green bands, possible movement
- Kp 6+: Active display with color, movement, and significant coverage of the northern sky. These are the nights worth staying up for
The displays that make the photos you have seen — vertical curtains of green and purple, reflection in the lake — typically require Kp 5 or higher.
When to Go
The aurora is active year-round, but visibility depends on darkness and clear skies.
Best months: September through March offer the longest dark hours. The equinox periods in March and September also correlate with higher geomagnetic activity — solar storms tend to align with equinoxes for reasons that are still not fully understood.
Moon phase matters. A full moon washes out faint aurora. Plan around a new moon if you can. Dark skies between 10 PM and 2 AM are the most productive window.
Solar cycle: We are currently near the peak of Solar Cycle 25, which runs through approximately 2025-2026. Geomagnetic activity is elevated during solar maximum, which means more frequent and more intense aurora events. This is an unusually good period to be watching.
How to Track the Forecast
NOAA Space Weather: The most reliable forecast source. spaceweather.gov and the NOAA 3-day geomagnetic forecast shows upcoming Kp predictions. Check it the afternoon before a clear night.
My Aurora Forecast app: Available for iPhone and Android. Sends push notifications when the Kp index rises above a threshold you set. Set it to alert you at Kp 4 and you will not miss a significant event.
Clear Outside app: Combines cloud cover forecast with aurora probability. Useful for quickly checking whether the next few nights have clear sky windows.
The forecast can change in hours. A Kp spike can arrive with less than an hour of warning. The most reliable approach is to check before bed on clear nights and be willing to go outside.
Viewing From the Property
The property faces east toward the lake. The northern lights appear in the northern sky, so the best viewing angle is to stand at the fire pit area and look left — northeast along the shoreline. The tree line is lower in that direction and the lake horizon is open.
The outdoor sauna heats in 40 to 50 minutes. On a cold clear night, rotating between the sauna and the fire pit while watching for aurora is the most comfortable way to spend a few hours waiting for the sky to do something.
Turn off the outdoor lights at the house. Let your eyes adjust for at least 15 minutes before drawing conclusions about what you can or cannot see. The faint displays that look like a greenish smear to the naked eye often appear dramatically in a 10-second phone photo.
Camera Settings for Aurora Photos
Most modern smartphones can capture aurora with a night mode or long exposure setting. For a dedicated camera:
- ISO 1600-3200
- Aperture as wide as it opens (f/1.8-f/2.8)
- Shutter speed 5-15 seconds
- Manual focus set to infinity
- Tripod or stable surface
The phone camera on a modern iPhone or Pixel in night mode will get a usable shot at Kp 4 or higher. The full camera setup is worth the effort at Kp 6+.
Realistic Expectations
Most North Shore trips do not produce a dramatic aurora display. Clear skies and high Kp rarely land on the same night by request.
That said, the star viewing from the property on any clear night is genuinely excellent. The Milky Way is visible in summer. Satellite passes are frequent and easy to spot. Meteor showers — the Perseids in August, the Geminids in December — are worth watching even without aurora activity.
The nights you do catch a good display tend to be remembered long after the rest of the trip fades.
